Describe animals like a pro with Aaron Blaise

Long before I was a director and animator with Walt Disney Characteristic Animation, I was a lover of wildlife. Growing up equally a bit of a wild child in the swamps of south Florida, I would typically be found running through the forest, barefoot of course, tracking animals. I would draw them in my sketchbooks or even collect the bones of animal kills and save them for afterwards study.

It was always my dream to be an illustrator for National Geographic and to meet the world. Instead, I went on to Disney and a successful animation career, but I nonetheless found a way to pursue my love of drawing animals past working on classic films like The Lion Male monarch and Brother Bear. Now I want to share some of the knowledge from my years of studying animals with you!

01. Observe first

(Prototype: © Aaron Blaise)

Before you starting time to draw, end and actually look. Take a moment to observe and written report the animal. How does it move? Often you'll notice patterns of movement. What'southward the animal doing?

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

Tin can you anticipate where it volition be next? If it's a hot day it might be heading for shade, for case. These sorts of details can be crucial in helping you capture details considering animals oftentimes won't sit down nevertheless and pose for yous – particularly in the wild!

02. Practice your research earlier you get there

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

I practise my homework on what animals I'll see in a detail expanse. For case, on a trip to Alaska I may try to learn everything I can almost grizzly bears, muskox and moose before I arrive. I'll written report books and do research to learn about their muscles, skeletons and patterning. I'll even watch live webcams of an expanse to give me a sense of the environment. This information volition aid me when I'm on location, and salve a lot of fourth dimension.

03. Take a mental picture

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

Animals often don't sit down nevertheless. To combat this I've adult a technique of taking a mental snapshot. I don't stare at the animal the entire time I'm drawing. Instead, I'll glance at the animal and and then quickly wait abroad to my page.

(Epitome: © Aaron Blaise)

By doing this the last image of the animal that I saw is frozen in my mind. Combined with my inquiry on anatomy, I'm able to get an accurate drawing downwardly on the page.

04. Break the torso up into sections

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

This is an ascertainment I've made over the years. Most quadrupeds can be broken down into six principal areas: the caput, the neck, the front legs and shoulders, the body, the rear legs and hips, and finally the tail. This may seem like a uncomplicated observation, but once you break the animate being up this fashion you can overlap those areas in any orientation in infinite.

05. Understand bones comparative anatomy

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

People ask how do I know all these details about the animals I draw? The reply is: I don't! But I do know comparative anatomy. Most animals, specially mammals, have still "parts" – simply spaced out differently. And this is true of humans too. Once I understood that

I have basically the same parts as a lion, just in different locations, information technology was a eureka moment in my ability to draw them.

06. Watch your proportions

(Prototype: © Aaron Blaise)

Now that you understand that nigh animals have the same basic and muscle groups equally yous do, it's merely a matter of playing with the proportions and getting those correct. This is primarily a matter of practise and repetition. But once you lot beginning to get the spacing and proportions correct, yous'll be able to depict your subject in any pose or angle.

07. Use blackness and white ink on midtone paper

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

How to enhance a pencil drawing of a lion's caput with inks, bringing it to life:

a). Create a rough sketch

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

First lay in a rough drawing in pencil begetting in listen all the tips you take already learned so far. It's okay to be loose at this stage. This can give your work a dynamic edge! You lot'll refine the epitome in the later on steps.

b). Add together darks to the drawing

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

Next, use a castor pen and/or ball point pen to lay downwardly the darks. Use waterproof ink hither in case you want to add watercolour or a launder later. Try to work in ane consistent direction so you don't smear the ink.

c). Use white ink for highlights

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

Now use a white pen (I like Sakura Gelly Coil pens for this) and add final accents and highlights. Because you started with a mid- tone and non on white you can go lighter and make information technology pop! Use markers to add together more shading.

08. Stay loose and observe the flow

(Paradigm: © Aaron Blaise)

This is similar to step half dozen if you lot want to get down a gesture of your pose correct away. The fauna is probable to move on you, so you need to get the essence of the pose fast. If you're drawing a tiger or lion you lot demand to get the activeness and don't worry most every stripe and whisker. Instead, await for the line of activity and rhythm to the pose.

09. Capture good silhouettes

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

The basics of proficient animal drawing are non that unlike from drawing a good human character. Y'all want their pose to read equally conspicuously and concisely every bit possible. If your silhouette isn't clear so the cartoon won't be understood by the viewer. It's the aforementioned whether you're drawing an elephant, a bear or whatever other animate being.

10. Employ overlapping shapes to create depth

(Prototype: © Aaron Blaise)

One time you're happy capturing the different shapes of your chosen creature, try overlapping them. This volition requite your paradigm a sense of depth and space in the frame. Properly overlapping each shape will give your drawings a sense of believability and life.

11. Create action and drama

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

Animals are living creatures. If you've been out in the wild drawing you'll have noticed that they're always on the move. You lot should be capturing this in your drawings as well. While at that place's nothing wrong with a good animal portrait (so to speak), I've found that images of animals in activeness e'er go a bigger response and have more impact. Work hard to develop a sense of drama and life into your images.

12. Exist mindful of low-cal and shadow

(Prototype: © Aaron Blaise)

Proper use of light and shadow in your epitome can aid heighten the feeling of drama that we discussed in footstep 11. I'll ofttimes push button or exaggerate the lighting of nature to heighten that feeling. Used properly, a dramatically bandage shadow tin deeply enhance the mood of your epitome likewise equally give it a sense of fourth dimension and place.

13. Wait for the big shapes first

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

A typical error that I meet artists make is they get too caught up in the details right away. Y'all don't need to exercise that. Instead, go downward the big shapes kickoff. For example, if yous're drawing an elephant and then observe the large "bean shape" of the body and lay that in, followed past the triangle or wedge shape of the head. Get their placement correct and the residual volition come up together chop-chop.

14. Look for emotion and personality

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

Whether cartoon an animal that'southward realistic or cartoony, endeavour to get as much personality as possible into the image. As humans nosotros look for this naturally and gravitate towards information technology. Use that to your advantage whenever possible. A little exaggeration or emphasis tin can get a long way.

xv. Exist selective when drawing your beast'southward pilus and fur

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

There's no need to be too detailed here. Yous don't need or want to depict each and every hair on an brute. Instead, brand marks in key spots to propose it. Places where the body bends are a great spot to indicate a hair intermission.
